The new Marconi Social Club

The Marconi Social Club on Beehive Lane has reopened after a major refurbishment. The new club has three bars, four meeting rooms, squash courts, a gym and a function hall.

For many years Marconi Social club (also known as the Marconi Athletic Sports and Social Club) has been a popular venue in the area, offering social events and fitness classes. However, in recent decades it had lacked some much needed investment.

Now the Marconi Club is once again set to become a social hub for people living in Great Baddow and Chelmsford.

The redevelopment has seen a few hitches – on their Facebook page they mentioned that they were without a BT phone and Internet lines for a while, but they are online now. In September they updated the Facebook page with “moving house is not the most stressful event in your life! try moving a working social club (50yrs+ of gems, dust and rubbish to sort)!

Jive and Zumba and More!

If you have been inspired by Strictly Come Dancing then the Marconi Social Club has jive and zumba classes, which provide a fun way to get in shape.

Latin and Ballroom dance classes are also held on Thursday nights with beginners and improvers lessons followed by social dancing.

You can also learn Line Dancing in classes run by Lois Lightfoot BWDA, or Salsa with Salsa Chillout.

Other Activities

At the club you can also participate in Short Mat Bowls, join the regular Bingo nights, learn to box in the fitness studio.

Tennis classes and matches are also held throughout the week. They have 4 full sized snooker tables too in the snooker room. Tables can be hired by the hour.

The club also hosts small concerts in the function room and provides a great venue for private parties too.

They also manage a field where football and cricket is played at the Marconi Leisure site on West Hanningfield Road.

Help for Heroes

The Marconi Club adopted the Help For Heroes charity for 2012 and ran several fund raising events including a comedy night (with open mic for brave would-be comics) as well as performances by the Jollywood Youth Theatre & Show Choir, Judy Hadgraft, First Steps Hip Hop Dance troup and Thomas Tull. BBC Radio Essex’s Steve Charelle has presented the evening too.

Guest Beers!

For beer lovers they have guest beers in their bar. In November they reported the following beers as being available in the bar:

  • COPPER FOX 3.8%
  • LEGEND 4%
  • BREWERS GOLD 4%
  • EXMOOR DARK 4.2%
  • EXMOOR GOLD 4%
  • YORKSHIRE BIG RED 4%

Hopefully they will always have one or two guest ales on offer.
