History

Pontlands Park Hotel was built in 1879 by Chelmsford’s famous architect, Fredrick Chancellor, who also built the Parish Hall. The house was built for Joseph Foster and is considered to be a good example of a small country house that was built by a prominent architect.

In 1777 the area was known as Pond Land, according to Chapman and André’s, Map of Essex. A century later, by 1881, the area was known as Pond Lands, according to an Ordnance Survey map.

During the late 19th century, possibly when the hotel was built, the name was changed to Pontlands Park.
